Smooth, painted walls

The happy place for decals.

45 days after painting

Let fresh paint fully cure.

Keep the backing sheet

Your ticket to moving them later.

Firm hand, soft cloth

Avoid scrapers and hard edges.

Will it work on my wall?

Every wall's a little different, and we'd rather tell you upfront than have you find out the hard way. Here's the honest read on what our decals are built for.

Yes

Smooth

Standard painted drywall or plaster, including the normal faint stipple left by a roller.

Your call

Lightly textured

Orange peel or fine dimples. We've seen mixed results, so a test patch first is worth the five minutes.

No

Heavily textured

Knockdown, popcorn, sand or swirl, hand-trowelled. Not enough flat surface for a decal to grip.

No

Not paint at all

Exposed brick, timber panelling, shiplap, wallpaper. Same underlying problem, different cause.

Wait 45 days

Freshly painted

Paint needs a full 45 days to cure before a decal goes anywhere near it.

No

Unprimed or flaking

A weak paint job won't hold a decal any better than it holds itself.

Usually fine

Wash & Wear / Low-VOC paint

Most work well with decals, but some can be tricky. A bonding primer is a good precaution if you're unsure.

Still not sure?

Stick a sample on the wall first. Our colour sample sheet covers the whole range.

VJ panelling?

Yes, as long as the design sits within one flat board rather than crossing a groove.

Mirrors?

Yes. Clean, dry glass is a great surface. Just wipe off any cleaner residue first.

Bathrooms?

Your call. It's the steam and humidity, not splashing water. Fine more often with good ventilation.

Covering a big chunk of wall?

A full panel, a wrap, anything large-format: test on a small offcut or an inconspicuous patch first. The more wall it covers, the more that five-minute check is worth it.

Before you stick, read this

Most walls are perfect for decals, and every decal's made from a premium fabric material that's kind to walls. Installing is a breeze for some and takes a bit more care for others. Either way, this guide sets you up for the best result, and our team's here to support you every step of the way.

1

Check your walls

Decals stick best to smooth, painted walls. Avoid applying them to:

  • Textured, bumpy or popcorn walls
  • Unprimed or flaking surfaces
  • Fresh paint (allow 45 days to cure)
  • Walls repainted without a primer coat between layers, as decals may lift the top layer.

Wash & Wear or Low VOC paint? Usually fine. If unsure, use a bonding primer from your local hardware store.

2

Wipe your walls

This one matters more than it looks. Any dust or grime left behind can stop your decal sticking properly and cause bubbling underneath.

Wipe the wall with a clean, damp cloth, then let it dry completely (at least 2 hours) before you start.

3

Watch out for air bubbles

Air bubbles are the most common hiccup, but they're totally avoidable.

Smooth as you go and push the air out toward the edges as you apply, rather than trying to fix it all at the end. Take it slow for a clean, bubble-free finish.

4

Watch & install

Once prepped, watch the quick video for your design below for a stress-free application.

Important: don't remove the entire backing paper at once. It can cause the decal to fold and stick to itself.

Hot tip: keep your backing sheet

Thinking of moving house one day? Hang onto the backing sheet. It's the easiest way to safely remove and transport your decals to a new wall, and you can reposition them again and again without losing any grip.

Something not quite right? Let's fix it.

The fixes below cover almost everything that comes up. Most of it's a five-minute job, not a five-star drama.

I've got air bubbles

Bubbling is easily the most common thing people run into, and it's almost always a quick fix.

  • Position the decal with the backing paper still on, and smooth it into place to hold it there.
  • Peel the backing away a little at a time, never all at once, working left to right as you go.
  • As each bit comes away, swipe a soft cloth across that section, pushing air out ahead of you before moving to the next.

Got a bubble already there? Use a soft cloth (rings off first) and press from the middle out toward the nearest edge. Fabric takes a firm hand, so don't be shy about the pressure. No squeegees, they can scratch the surface.

It won't stay stuck, or it's lifting at the edges

Before anything else, it's worth checking:

  • How long ago was the wall painted? Fresh paint needs 45 days to fully cure.
  • What type of paint is on the wall? Wash & Wear, washable, scrubbable, or low/zero VOC?
  • Is the wall smooth, or does it have any texture to it?
  • Was the surface clean, dry and dust-free before the decal went on?
  • Were the decals left in storage for a long period. (rolled up)

Any of these can be the culprit, and a bonding primer from your local hardware store is worth a look if the paint type's the issue.

The colour looks different to what I saw online

Screens, lighting and even the time of day all change how a colour reads. It's common, not a fault. If you'd like a true read before committing to a full order, our colour sample sheet covers the whole range.

I'm moving house, or just moving rooms

Our decals are repositionable, so you can take them with you. Keep the backing sheet. It makes moving and reapplying far easier.

Something's wrong with what arrived

Check every piece before you install it. Once a decal's on the wall, we can no longer tell what happened before it got there. Spot something? Contact Us with photos before you apply anything and we'll sort a replacement.

If a box arrived visibly damaged in transit, photos and your order number within 14 days gets a replacement moving.

A few more things people ask

Will the decals damage my walls?

They're designed to come off cleanly from a properly prepared, well-primed wall, with no sticky residue. The wall check is the best five minutes you can spend before ordering.

Do decals stick to textured walls?

It depends which kind of texture. See the full breakdown in Will it work on my wall?

Can I apply to a freshly painted wall?

Give it 45 days. Paint that's still curing is softer than it looks, and a decal can end up pulling it away when it's removed or repositioned.

I'm moving home. Can I take them with me?

Yes. Keep the backing sheet and they'll move with you.

My order arrived damaged. What do I do?

Email us photos and your order number within 14 days of delivery and we'll get a replacement moving. No need to send anything back.

Fabric or vinyl? Here's the difference.

"Fabric" throws a lot of people. It's not cloth, and it's not the vinyl most wall stickers are made from either. We use two different materials on purpose, matched to where each one lives.

For walls

Fabric decals

Wall decals, rainbows, arches, panels and murals are made from a specialty fabric decal material. A soft, matte film that sits flush against the wall like paint, a step up from the glossy vinyl finish most wall stickers use.

Keep it dry. It's a fine print material rather than vinyl, so water or a damp cloth can make the ink run. Dust with a dry, soft cloth if it ever needs a clean.

For furniture

Vinyl decals

Trofast Tubs and Trofast Tops are made from vinyl instead, a tougher, glossier material we chose deliberately for the surfaces that get the most hands-on use in a kid's room.

It's fully wipeable and built to handle grubby little fingers, day after day.

Taking one down?

Fabric decals are repositionable and peel away cleanly on their own in most cases. On an older paint job or in a rental and want extra peace of mind? Run a hairdryer on low heat over the decal for a few seconds first. It gently warms the adhesive and makes it even easier to lift, edge to edge.
